Farming Operations
Making Farm Compost
Making compost by Aerated Static Pile Syestem is not only time efficient but also low cost. Horse and cow manure source from local dairy farms, on-farm left over vegetables, leaves, wood chips and so on make a perfect C:N ratio. The organic compost really makes different for our soil and our crops.
Preparing the field
Minimizing soil disturbance is one of the key principles of soil health. That’s why we use a large amount of organic compost to improve the soil condition in order to reduce tillage. However, tillage is an option when necessary.
Planting
Having a 6-row corn seeder and 4-row wheat seeder is the best option for our scale of farm. We purchase organic seed and save our own seed.
Weeding
Weeding is necessary because weeds compete with main crop plants for different factors such as water, sunlight, nutrients, and space and hence affect plant growth. Corn interrow cultivator is ideal for mechanical weed control between the plant rows when the plants are young. So timing is vital for this process or we will have to pull out the weed by hand.
